The upcoming Gaza peace summit is anticipated to mark a pivotal moment in putting an end to the two-year conflict and violence in the area, as stated by Keir Starmer. Prime Minister, along with US President Donald Trump, is set to attend the signing of the peace agreement in Sharm El-Sheikh. The event will also see the presence of Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, UN Secretary General António Guterres, and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Keir Starmer is expected to emphasize the importance of seizing the opportunity to achieve lasting peace and a secure future for the entire region. The UK pledges its support for the ensuing negotiations to ensure the full execution of the peace plan, facilitating the rebuilding of lives in a safe environment.

A significant announcement during the summit is expected from Mr. Starmer regarding £20 million in UK aid, part of a broader commitment of £116 million, to assist Gaza. This aid aims to provide crucial water, sanitation, and hygiene services to tens of thousands of civilians in the conflict-affected region.

Yvette Cooper highlighted the collaborative efforts of the UK with international partners leading up to President Trump’s peace initiative. Urgency is stressed for the reconstruction of Gaza, where about 92% of homes have been damaged or destroyed due to Israeli attacks, resulting in over 67,000 casualties in the past two years.

The Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, acknowledged the UK’s significant role in the peace process but emphasized that Hamas would have no role in Gaza’s reconstruction. However, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s deputy foreign minister, Sharren Haskel, contradicted the notion that the UK played a major behind-the-scenes role.

Last month, the UK, along with countries like France, Australia, and Canada, officially recognized Palestinian statehood, further solidifying international support for the region’s stability and recovery.
