A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that some of the major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. The study indicates that smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing the leading brands by offering faster speeds, more dependable connections, and better value.

The research highlights that issues with internet connections, such as frequent dropouts, are prevalent among consumers. Complaints about slow download speeds and service outages are also common frustrations reported by users.

An overwhelming 91% of broadband customers disclosed experiencing issues with their internet service in the past year, indicating that only a small minority of households have enjoyed a trouble-free connection.

Among the top providers, Sky ranked poorly for frequent dropouts, with 38% of customers facing this issue. Virgin Media also performed inadequately, with 30% of users experiencing regular connection dropouts despite paying high broadband bills. Furthermore, a significant number of Virgin customers voiced concerns about slow download speeds.

Sky users expressed dissatisfaction with their broadband performance, with nearly one in three customers feeling that the speed was inadequate. Other major providers like TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service also received low ratings from customers.

On the positive side, smaller UK providers continue to excel, with Zen Internet receiving praise for its reliability. Community Fibre and Hyperoptic also stood out for their performance. Among the larger providers, Plusnet demonstrated superior performance compared to rivals like Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.

The findings align with previous Which? studies, consistently showing that smaller broadband companies outperform major providers in terms of reliability, customer service, and value for money.

Which? recommends that households explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if dissatisfied with their current service. Using Ofcom’s broadband checker can help users identify available broadband networks easily.

In response to the report, a spokesperson from Virgin Media emphasized the company’s ongoing investments in delivering quality services, citing positive feedback from official sources and independent data.

The report underscores the importance of quality broadband as an essential service and encourages consumers to leverage their options to switch to providers that offer better service and value.
