A tragic incident unfolded during an inquest where it was revealed that a 16-year-old girl, Georgia Scarff, from Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, lost her life after being hit by a lorry. The young student had expressed her distress in a journal entry, stating a preference for self-harm over returning to boarding school, particularly the Royal Hospital School in Holbrook. The unfortunate event occurred on April 15, 2024, as Georgia was diligently preparing for her GCSE exams at the prestigious school where she was a weekly boarder and also working part-time at a hotel.

During the inquest, Georgia’s mother, Jennifer Scarff, depicted her daughter as remarkably mature for her age, noting her strength and resilience. Jennifer fondly remembered Georgia as her closest confidante and constant support. Despite the necessity of boarding due to their long commute, it was evident that Georgia grappled with the arrangement. She displayed a strong interest in global affairs and desired to comprehend her role in the world.

Testifying at the inquest, Zoë King, the school’s pastoral deputy head, acknowledged Georgia’s struggles with boarding life. Concerns were raised in January 2020 when Georgia’s mother discovered a troubling journal entry indicating her reluctance to return to school, prompting the school to offer support and assistance.

Georgia, an avid athlete involved in various sports activities at school, presented a facade of managing well amidst her challenges, as noted by Ms. King. The revelation of her passing came as a profound shock to those who knew her. In light of her bereavement and difficulties, Georgia remained under close observation by school staff.

The day before the tragic incident, Georgia had packed her belongings and returned home with her sister, spending a relaxed evening with her family. Her mother last saw her around 10 pm before receiving a distressing call from Georgia in the early hours, leading to the heartbreaking news of her passing at 2 am.

The inquest is ongoing, seeking to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding this devastating event.
