A mother, Jamila Afelom, heartbreakingly identified her daughter, Fatin Ben Homar Azizi’s body by a necklace she had given her before she departed. Fatin’s lifeless body was discovered in a hospital after she attempted to swim from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Afelom, speaking from Tétouan, Morocco, described Fatin as bold, determined, and somewhat tomboyish.

Fatin, a 26-year-old with a passion for soccer, often skipped school to play football, leaving her schoolbag behind. She trained with Coach Adel El Kaab of Moghreb Athletic Tétouan before joining Moghreb Atletico Tanger. El Kaab, who coaches male teams professionally but volunteers to train women’s teams, mourned Fatin as a younger sister.

Fatin’s family, struggling with economic hardships, sought a better life in Europe. Despite warnings about the risks of irregular migration routes, Fatin was determined to pursue a brighter future. Tragically, she lost her life in the attempt.

Youth unemployment in Morocco, estimated at around 36 percent, drives many young Moroccans to seek opportunities abroad. Fatin’s tragic story sheds light on the harsh realities faced by migrants seeking a way out of challenging circumstances.

The loss of Fatin deeply impacts her family, especially her mother, who worries about her surviving children in Ceuta. Despite the heartbreaking outcome, Fatin’s dream of escaping poverty remains unfulfilled, leaving a stark reminder of the perils of irregular migration routes.
