Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Czech player Barbora Krejcikova progressed to the next round of the Cincinnati Open by defeating the fourth-seeded duo of Spain’s Cristina Bucsa and American Nicole Melichar-Martinez with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 10-4 in the Round of 32 women’s doubles match on Monday. The game lasted for one hour and 33 minutes.
This tournament marks the first time Dabrowski and Krejcikova have teamed up. Their next opponents in the Round of 16 on Tuesday will be the unseeded Czech pair of Linda Noskova and Marie Bouzkova.
Meanwhile, Leylah Fernandez from Laval, Quebec, and her partner Sara Errani of Italy secured a victory against Tamara Korpatsch of Germany and British player Emily Webley-Smith after a match lasting one hour and 29 minutes. They won 6-2, 7-6 (2) with the first set taking 31 minutes. While Korpatsch and Webley-Smith made a strong comeback in the second set, they couldn’t seal the win despite leading 6-5 and serving for victory.
Fernandez and Errani recorded two aces, 23 winners, one double fault, and only nine unforced errors out of the match’s total 34. Their upcoming match in the Round of 16 will be against Chan Hao-ching from Taiwan and Maya Joint from Australia.
In the women’s singles event, Fernandez was defeated by Xiyu Wang of China in the second round on Sunday.
