The Toronto Tempo, a WNBA team, introduced their long-awaited mascots during a game on Tuesday, but the reception from fans has been mixed. Dez the snapping turtle and Dot the Arctic hare, representing different speeds inspired by Aesop’s fable, are the mascots for Canada’s sole WNBA franchise, each with unique characteristics.

Dez, hailing from Muskoka, is calm and enjoys music, soft-shell tacos, and is a Taurus. On the other hand, Dot, nicknamed after Toronto’s T-Dot, is energetic, fond of cotton candy, the Netflix F1 series “Drive to Survive,” and is a Gemini. Their paths crossed when Dot ventured south following the northern lights to Dez’s territory, realizing they complement each other well.

Described in a news release by the Tempo, Dez and Dot bonded over their shared love for rhythm, albeit with contrasting approaches. Their journey eventually led them to Toronto, drawn by the city’s vibrant pulse. However, not all fans have embraced the new mascots, criticizing their design and lack of appeal compared to other sports mascots like the Toronto Raptors’ Raptor.

Some online comments express disapproval of the mascots’ appearance, with some finding their faces unsettling. Despite the criticism, Whitney Bell, the Tempo’s chief marketing officer, emphasized the mascots’ Canadian identity. Some critics argue that the mascots do not sufficiently represent Canadian or Torontonian symbols, suggesting alternatives like a beaver or raccoon.

While some fans appreciate the concept of the tortoise and hare dynamics in the mascots’ portrayal, others have speculated about their relationship status, including dating rumors. However, beat reporter Chelsea Leite clarified that Dez and Dot are simply best friends, not siblings or romantic partners.

With a challenging season and a recent elimination from playoff contention after a loss to the Washington Mystics, the Tempo are hoping their new mascots will bring some much-needed luck to turn their season around.
