Nearly four years ago, Sokvin Vann found herself stuck in a routine, but with the encouragement of her brother, she discovered a positive outlet in her passion for K-pop and BTS, a popular South Korean boy band. Vann established BTS Army Toronto, a local fan club that organizes gatherings and events to unite fans of the band. Despite facing personal tragedy with her brother’s passing, Vann has grown the organization into a thriving community that hosts events, conducts giveaways, fundraises, and supports local Korean businesses.
As BTS prepares for their highly anticipated return to Toronto after more than a decade, Vann, along with her son Jordan Vann and a dedicated team of about 10 individuals, is excited about the upcoming concerts. BTS, known for hit songs like “Swim,” “Permission to Dance,” and “Butter,” is set to perform for around 100,000 fans over two sold-out shows at Rogers Stadium as part of their Arirang World Tour.
The loyal BTS fan base, referred to as the “army,” is deeply connected to the band’s music, which often touches on themes such as mental health, self-love, and personal growth. Vann, a real estate agent by profession, has expanded her involvement beyond BTS Army Toronto to launch a business venture called Idol Konnect, offering consulting, event planning, and tour support for K-pop artists.
Following a hiatus due to mandatory military service for its members, BTS’s current world tour includes 88 shows across 34 cities in 23 countries, with Toronto being the only Canadian stop. The group’s success has catapulted them to international stardom, with achievements like their Billboard-topping English single “Dynamite” in 2020, reflecting the growing influence of K-pop globally.
Excitement is building in Toronto as fans eagerly await the weekend concerts, with preparations such as renaming a portion of Yonge Street to “BTS Boulevard” and the opening of an official BTS merchandise pop-up store. Fans like Nicole Chau, who traveled from Kitchener, are thrilled about the opportunity to see the band live and are actively engaging in the pre-concert festivities.
As the concert dates approach, Vann and BTS Army Toronto are gearing up to engage with fans at events surrounding the concerts, providing guidance on navigating the city and offering a platform for the community to connect and share their experiences. Vann is particularly looking forward to the unique concert experience and the special bond shared among fans during and after the performances.
The anticipation for BTS’s return to Toronto signifies not just a musical event but a cultural phenomenon that continues to resonate with fans worldwide, creating lasting memories and connections within the dedicated BTS community.
