A recent discovery of fossilized eggshells suggests that some of the largest dinosaurs, known as titanosaurs, managed to hatch their eggs in a cooler climate, far from the equator. Despite their massive size, titanosaurs did not rely on sitting on their eggs to keep them warm, as they were too large for traditional brooding methods.

In a new study led by University of Tsukuba paleontologist Kohei Tanaka and University of Calgary paleontologist Darla Zelenitsky, researchers analyzed microscopic pores on the titanosaurs’ eggshells. They concluded that these dinosaurs likely used a similar incubation technique as modern crocodiles, burying their eggs in warm piles of decaying vegetation to maintain the necessary warmth for hatching.

Titanosaurs were enormous plant-eating dinosaurs with long necks and tails, weighing up to 75 tonnes, comparable to half the mass of a blue whale. Fossilized volleyball-sized eggs, identified as Fusioolithus, have been associated with titanosaurs and were previously found in warmer regions. However, recent discoveries of Fusioolithus eggshell fragments in Argentina’s Chorrillo Formation, dating back 72 to 66 million years ago, have surprised researchers due to the region’s cooler climate at the time.

The study sheds light on the diverse nesting strategies of dinosaurs, showcasing their adaptability to different environments. The findings suggest that titanosaurs, despite their size, developed innovative ways to ensure the survival of their offspring in varied geographical locations. The research underscores the remarkable abilities of dinosaurs to thrive and reproduce in challenging conditions, highlighting their evolutionary success.
