It seems like a distant memory when Keir Starmer triumphantly walked through Downing Street after a landslide election win. Back during the 2024 campaign, as I trailed him alongside other journalists, he appeared to enjoy the interactions with the press. However, fast forward to February 2026, and the situation has turned sour.

Amid swirling inquiries regarding the appointment of Peter Mandelson and open skepticism from fellow lawmakers about his tenure, Starmer must have felt like a vulnerable target in a hostile environment. It’s astonishing that just 18 months after securing a significant victory, a Prime Minister is now facing serious calls to step down.

Recently, Starmer gave a speech at a sports center in Hastings focusing on unity, investment, and notably, taking a swipe at Reform with an impending by-election looming. Nevertheless, the controversial decision to bring in Mandelson, dubbed the “Prince of Darkness,” could make or break Starmer’s leadership.

Having observed numerous speeches by Starmer over the years, this one appeared to be his most visibly enraged moment. At one point, from the back of the room, it was evident that the typically composed PM was visibly shaking with anger as he unleashed his frustrations about Mandelson.

Following the recent criticisms during PMQs, Starmer is well aware that his political future hinges on disassociating himself from Mandelson, who resigned amid escalating discontent. However, the undeniable fact remains that Mandelson’s ties to Epstein were known even before his appointment, raising doubts about the PM’s decision-making.

In a direct question to Starmer about potentially striking a deal with the devil by appointing Mandelson, the issue of potential advantages stemming from associations with Epstein and Trump was left unanswered. Notably, an apology was extended to Epstein’s victims for believing Mandelson’s deceitful claims, although skepticism remains high among his detractors.

Acknowledging the public awareness of Mandelson’s ties to Epstein, Starmer struggled through what may be his most challenging speech to date. The looming threat of confidence votes and increasing dissent within Labour ranks add to the mounting pressure on Starmer, with the Mandelson controversy risking a pivotal moment in his leadership.

Critics ponder if Starmer’s actions have been sufficient. One MP expressed doubt, suggesting that Starmer may be out of touch with the frustrations and anger within the party. While he may have bought himself some time, the growing discontent within the PLP poses a significant challenge to his leadership.

Overall, the unfolding Mandelson scandal presents a critical juncture for Starmer’s premiership, with stakes higher than they have been since Labour’s return to power.
