Marlborough locals bid farewell to a high-end dining establishment owned by a renowned chef and BBC personality. The restaurant faced closure previously, but was saved through a rent reduction five years ago. Rick Stein, known for his multiple dining venues across the UK and Australia, is now considering closing his Grade II listed Marlborough restaurant due to underperformance.

The restaurant chain is in discussions with its team to explore options to prevent the closure. Despite the success of other establishments, this particular site has not met expectations, leading to the potential decision to shut it down permanently.

In a statement, a restaurant spokesperson acknowledged the proposed closure of the Marlborough branch, highlighting the challenges faced by this specific location. This situation echoes a similar event from five years ago when the restaurant had to let go of 39 employees, only to rehire them after agreeing to a rent reduction.

Rick Stein, who operates the restaurant group with his ex-wife and children, expressed gratitude for the previous rent reduction that allowed them to continue operating in Marlborough. However, financial difficulties persisted, as evidenced by recent financial reports indicating losses in both the Marlborough and Padstow restaurants.

Amidst these challenges, Ian Fitzgerald, Managing Director of Seafood Restaurant (Padstow) Limited, emphasized the industry’s struggle with rising operational costs due to government policies. He called for support from policymakers to alleviate financial burdens on hospitality businesses and prevent further job losses.

Looking ahead, the Rick Stein group is actively seeking new partnerships to expand its presence in the UK and international markets. This move follows the success of Rick Stein’s ventures in Australia. The difficulties faced by Rick Stein’s restaurants are not unique, as seen in the recent closure of Chef Dom Taylor’s Caribbean restaurant, Marvee’s Food Shop.

Additionally, Chef Rick Stein’s impressive career in the culinary world includes numerous TV appearances, cookbooks, and prestigious awards. Despite the challenges, the Rick Stein brand remains resilient, with plans for future growth and expansion.
