The UK Health Security Agency is advising individuals getting ready for Diwali to ensure they receive their flu and Covid-19 vaccinations if they are eligible. It is crucial to get vaccinated this week to have protection in time for the festivities as vaccines can take up to two weeks to provide full immunity and alleviate any potential side effects.
With Diwali approaching on October 20, families are urged to act promptly to safeguard themselves during the celebrations. The traditional activities of Diwali, such as sharing food, exchanging gifts, and gathering with friends and relatives, pose a heightened health risk due to the increased chances of flu and Covid-19 transmission in indoor group settings.
Kirit Mistry from South Asian Health Action emphasized the importance of prioritizing health and well-being during the upcoming festive season. Vaccination is highlighted as a key measure to ensure a healthy and sickness-free Diwali celebration.
While certain individuals qualify for free vaccinations through the NHS, others may need to pay for the vaccines but can still avail themselves of the protection they offer. Getting vaccinated now can also provide defense throughout the winter period as flu season commences.
To be eligible for the free winter Covid-19 vaccine, individuals must meet specific criteria. Some individuals may require additional vaccine doses, especially if they are undergoing treatments that compromise their immune system.
It is crucial for parents to ensure their children receive their flu vaccinations ahead of events like Diwali to protect not only their kids but also other vulnerable individuals they may come into contact with. Dr. Anjali Pai from UKHSA stressed the importance of vaccination for members of the Hindu, Jain, and Sikh communities to stay healthy and resilient during the winter months. Vaccinating children not only protects them from flu-related hospitalizations but also aids in preventing the spread of flu within families and communities.
