A neurologist recently shared a crucial bedtime routine he strictly avoids to safeguard his brain health. Emphasizing the potential risks involved, he cautioned against leaving scented candles burning while sleeping.

Doctor Baibing Cheng, popularly known as Dr. Bing, highlighted the dangers of the fine particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by scented candles. These substances, if inhaled over time due to poor ventilation, can have adverse effects on brain health.

VOCs, which readily evaporate at room temperature, not only contribute to air pollution but can also pose serious health risks. Research published in Nature Communications in 2024 revealed the detrimental impact of VOC exposure on human health, including respiratory issues and an increased cancer risk.

Another recent study linked candle pollution to cognitive decline, demonstrating significant cognitive impairments in individuals exposed to candle smoke. The findings underscored the negative effects of particulate matter (PM) pollution on essential brain functions like emotion processing and task concentration. Dr. Thomas Faherty from the University of Birmingham emphasized the immediate negative effects of short-term PM exposure on brain functions crucial for daily activities.

In addition to the candle warning, Dr. Bing shared two other brain-healthy habits he practices. He advised against taking scalding hot showers for extended periods, citing the risk of blood vessel dilation and blood pooling in the legs, potentially leading to fainting or serious injuries. To mitigate these risks, he suggested limiting shower time and staying hydrated.

Furthermore, Dr. Bing highlighted the dangers of mixing caffeine and alcohol, cautioning against combining stimulants with depressants due to the mismatched effects on alertness and reaction time. He stressed the importance of staying hydrated and keeping alcohol consumption simple to avoid potential neurological emergencies.

It is essential to be mindful of these insights shared by Dr. Bing to prioritize brain health and overall well-being.
