A fascinating wonder of nature, the narwhal tusk can reach lengths of up to three meters. This unique tusk, which is actually an elongated upper tooth that grows straight through the whale’s lip on the left side, sets itself apart as the only mammal tusk that grows without any curves.
An international team of researchers has recently uncovered the mystery behind the narwhal tusk’s straight growth pattern, attributing it to the distinctive arrangement of opposing spirals. Henrik Birkedal, a study author from Aarhus University in Denmark, expressed surprise at the revelation of two opposing spirals within the tusk.
New findings, detailed in a study published in the journal Nature Communications, elucidate how these opposing spirals, one turning right and the other left, contribute to the tusk’s straight alignment. The project originated from Birkedal’s collaboration with colleagues investigating the handedness of molecules, spurred by the observation that narwhal tusks exhibit consistent leftward spirals.
Through a joint effort involving biologists from Greenland and physicists from Sweden, the research team delved into the molecular composition and spiral structure of narwhal tusks. Utilizing advanced imaging techniques akin to CT scans, they unveiled a complex composition featuring two opposing spirals – a left-handed spiral on the outer cementum layer and a right-handed spiral within the dentine layer.
This discovery not only unravels the mystery of the narwhal’s uniquely straight tusk but also holds promise for shedding light on the structural principles of human bones and similar anatomical features, according to Birkedal.
Renowned narwhal biologist and Harvard University specialist in marine mammal teeth, Martin Nweeia, hailed the research’s in-depth examination of what he deems “the most extraordinary tooth on the planet.” Nweeia’s own research emphasizes the tusk’s primary function as a sensory organ, contrary to the speculative attributions highlighted in the study.
Looking ahead, Nweeia advocates for future research endeavors involving narwhals to incorporate off-season studies and collaboration with Indigenous communities, particularly in the Canadian Arctic where these mammals predominantly reside. Recognizing the pivotal role of traditional knowledge alongside scientific inquiry, Nweeia underscores the importance of integrative approaches in studying these enigmatic creatures.
