Children’s book author Julia Donaldson recently discussed her latest release, “Gruffalo Granny,” in an interview. Despite initial doubts about the success of her first book, “The Gruffalo,” Donaldson’s storytelling has captivated audiences for over two decades. The unconventional rhyming tale, set in the deep, dark woods, defied literary norms and became a surprise hit.

Now, with “Gruffalo Granny,” the third and possibly final installment in the series, Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler continue the saga of the Gruffalo family. The new book features the original Gruffalo and its child preparing for the arrival of Gruffalo Granny, known for her enormous appetite.

Donaldson revealed that writing “Gruffalo Granny” evoked a similar creative process as the original book. She emphasized her focus on crafting a compelling story rather than catering to specific readers’ expectations. Despite her reluctance to add more Gruffalo books, Donaldson remains committed to her career as a children’s writer, with her upcoming book “Winnifred Duck” set for release soon.

The success of “Gruffalo Granny” has been remarkable, with record-breaking sales within days of its release. The book quickly became the best-selling title in the UK for 2026 across all genres and age groups. Reflecting on the enduring appeal of the Gruffalo series, Donaldson expressed pride in the multigenerational impact of her work.

As fans eagerly await Donaldson’s future projects, such as “Winnifred Duck,” inspired by a real-life event involving rubber ducks lost at sea, her storytelling prowess continues to enchant readers of all ages.
