Skydance’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery in the United States for $81 billion has been finalized by Paramount, marking the birth of the new Hollywood entity named “Skydance.” This union combines two long-standing American movie studios, incorporating HBO Max, popular titles such as “Harry Potter” and “Sinners,” as well as networks like CNN under the same umbrella as Paramount+, CBS, “Top Gun,” and “The Godfather.”
The leadership of billionaire David Ellison and co-CEO Ynon Kreiz, previously of Mattel, will oversee all these entities, consolidating power in an industry dominated by a few key players. Although there are plans to merge Paramount+ and HBO Max into a single streaming service eventually, current exclusive content deals in Canada with Bell Media’s Crave for HBO, Rogers for Discovery, and Corus for certain Paramount titles, including the Cartoon Network, are expected to remain unchanged for the foreseeable future.
While streaming service accessibility may stay consistent, price increases are anticipated, according to market research experts. Skydance has committed to releasing a minimum of 30 films annually over the next two years, with a subsequent increase to 32 films per year for the following three years, potentially impacting the independent cinema sector.
The promise of increased film production by Paramount may not necessarily translate into more opportunities for Canadian entertainment industry professionals due to budget reallocations and potential job cuts. Skydance’s intention to boost U.S. film production spending by at least $1.5 billion over the next five years may result in job losses, with reports suggesting potential layoffs in Los Angeles.
The Hollywood community has displayed mixed responses to the merger, with notable figures expressing opposition while others support Paramount’s commitments to the film industry. The acquisition has also raised concerns about editorial independence at CNN, with assurances from Ellison about maintaining autonomy and the establishment of a “News Editorial Independence Board.”
The relationship between U.S. President Donald Trump and the Ellison family adds another layer of intrigue to the merger narrative, with past interactions between Trump and Paramount’s chief. Despite assurances of editorial integrity, skepticism remains regarding potential editorial influence under Skydance’s ownership.
