Iran confirmed on Wednesday that it had engaged in a series of attacks on 10 vessels near the Strait of Hormuz following the sinking of five Iranian oil tankers by the United States. The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced retaliatory measures, including a ballistic missile strike on a U.S. base near Al Azraq in eastern Jordan. They also targeted two U.S. ships and eight oil tankers that were trying to navigate through a restricted area in the Strait of Hormuz.
These confrontations in and around the crucial waterway led to a surge in oil prices, with the international Brent crude benchmark exceeding $100 a barrel for the first time since July. The ongoing conflict has disrupted global oil markets, with hopes for a resolution between the U.S. and Iran fading.
Tensions have escalated further due to clashes between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen, with recent attacks on Saudi cities causing significant damage to oil facilities. As a result, energy markets are facing increased uncertainty.
The impact of these events is being felt by American consumers, as gasoline prices have risen substantially, averaging $4.15 per gallon for regular gas and $5.90 for diesel. The situation has become a pressing issue ahead of the upcoming November midterm elections in the U.S.
The conflict has also affected Canada, where gas prices have climbed by 25 to 40 percent. In response, the Canadian government has extended a gas tax holiday until the end of January to alleviate the financial burden on consumers.
Amidst the escalating tensions, Iran has declared a restricted maritime zone extending from Chabahar in Iran into parts of the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. This move comes in response to perceived threats from the U.S. and its allies in the region.
In a separate incident, a drone strike targeted a tanker carrying Iraqi fuel oil in Iraqi territorial waters, causing a fire but no casualties among the crew. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency reported similar incidents in the Gulf and Gulf of Oman.
