A recent study has revealed that almost half of households are adjusting their energy consumption this winter due to significantly high bills. The survey conducted by MoneySuperMarket indicates that 45% of respondents have delayed turning on their heating compared to last year. Additionally, 10% of participants have had disagreements within their families over heating usage, and 6% believe that someone in their household fell ill due to inadequate heating.

These findings coincide with the upcoming increase in the price cap by Ofgem, set to reach an average of £1,758 annually for many households. Although the rise is marginal at 0.2%, bills have surged by 50% since the cap’s inception in 2019.

Over half of the surveyed households feel that the cost of living has worsened in the last year, with 31% having to make financial cutbacks. Laura Hinton from MoneySuperMarket Energy emphasized the financial strain on households due to escalating energy costs and everyday expenses, prompting many to be cautious with their energy usage.

To alleviate energy expenses, households are advised to consider switching to fixed deals and utilizing energy-efficient appliances. Installing smart meters can also aid in monitoring real-time energy usage and identifying power-consuming appliances. The Energy Saving Trust offers 12 additional tips to help households save on energy bills during the holiday season.

Among the suggestions are adjusting boiler flow temperatures, using draught excluders, optimizing dishwasher and washing machine usage, and embracing energy-saving practices in cooking and lighting. These measures can collectively lead to significant annual savings and contribute to reducing energy consumption.

By implementing these strategies, households can effectively manage their energy costs and enhance energy efficiency during the winter season.
