The annual general assembly of the Gwich’in Tribal Council has been delayed, as announced in a press release on Thursday. The council cited the need for additional time to finalize certain financial documents as the reason for the postponement. Originally scheduled to commence next Wednesday in Fort McPherson, new dates and instructions for participation will be provided at a later time, according to the release.
The decision to delay the assembly was made after careful consideration, given the significance of the matters typically addressed during the annual meeting. Past council gatherings have also faced financial-related challenges. In a previous meeting, the council had informed attendees that audited financial statements would not be disclosed, a customary practice at such assemblies. Delays in obtaining financial data from the Gwich’in Development Corporation (GDC), a company wholly owned by the tribal council, were cited as the primary reason for the financial statement holdup.
