A grandfather’s leisure trip to London took a devastating turn as he underwent a sudden double leg amputation within hours. Rick Viner, 70, faced the shocking reality of losing his ability to walk following an unexpected health crisis.
Rick, who had recently retired early with exciting travel plans alongside his wife, Zena Viner, began experiencing severe leg pain. Despite being described as a very active and healthy individual by his daughter, Gemma Brooks, the persistent pain was initially overlooked during visits to doctors.
During a day out in London with his wife, Rick’s legs unexpectedly gave way, leaving him immobile on the street. Rushed to a hospital in London and later back to Oxfordshire, Rick received devastating news that both his legs were severely affected by blood clots, necessitating immediate amputation.
Doctors had initially hoped to dissolve the blood clots through surgery but were unsuccessful. Consequently, Rick underwent amputations below the knee due to the severity of the condition. Further complications arose as a rare fungal infection called Aspergillus Fumigatus Aortitis was discovered, likely originating from a previous heart valve replacement surgery.
Despite enduring multiple health setbacks, including a bone infection leading to another leg amputation, Rick’s condition remains challenging with no definite cure. His daughter, Gemma, shared their family’s focus on creating lasting memories and supporting Rick through his health journey.
Gemma’s commitment to raising awareness and funds for the Fungal Infection Trust and Diabetes UK reflects her dedication to her father’s well-being. She highlighted the importance of cherishing moments together as a family while her father bravely navigates life as a wheelchair user.
In a heartfelt gesture, Gemma is set to participate in the Oxford half-marathon to honor her father’s support and inspire others in similar situations. Her resilience and determination stem from her father’s unwavering strength and will to overcome adversity.
