The German government has attributed an attempted attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport last month to Russia, involving a drone carrying explosives. In response, Germany revealed plans to close a Russian consulate and take other actions against Moscow. The discovery of the drone near a Ukrainian aircraft on August 4 raised concerns due to the potential threat it posed. German officials have accused Moscow of engaging in acts of sabotage and disruption across Europe to undermine support for Ukraine and destabilize European nations.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt mentioned that the drone’s configuration, components, explosives, and detonator resembled those used in previous Russian hybrid operations against Ukraine. He highlighted the high level of technical expertise and meticulous planning involved in the incident, suggesting that lower-level operatives were tasked with executing the plan.

Authorities in Berlin indicated that individuals associated with Russian state entities were likely behind the attack. The German government emphasized the significant strain on bilateral relations caused by the incident and announced the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn starting September 18. Additionally, measures will be taken to increase pressure on entities suspected of violating international sanctions, including tankers transporting Russian oil.

While Russia denied involvement in the drone attack, German officials reiterated their stance on Russian responsibility based on investigations and intelligence findings. The Russian ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Ministry in Berlin for further discussions. The European Union has supported Germany in response to the incident, with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte expressing full solidarity.

In light of escalating tensions, Germany has proposed expanding EU sanctions lists and enhancing entry controls for individuals from Russia. The EU has implemented numerous sanctions against Russia in response to its actions in Ukraine. The incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport is just one in a series of incidents across Europe that Western officials have linked to Russia since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
