Grace Stelmachowicz, a resident of Squamish, B.C., shares her personal journey in this First Person column. She reflects on her upbringing where the traditional path to success was ingrained in her — attend university, secure a job in your field, get married, buy a house, and start a family. This narrative was strongly influenced by her parents and the high school counselor’s advice.

In 2016, as Grace completed her second year in biomedical engineering at the University of Guelph, her plan was to land a summer engineering job to enhance her resume. However, after facing rejections in Ontario, she unexpectedly found employment at a horseback trail riding company in Banff National Park. Despite this deviation from her original career trajectory, Grace excelled in the role due to her upbringing around horses on her family farm in southern Ontario.

Her time in Banff allowed her to fulfill her childhood dream of riding in the Rockies, guiding guests through picturesque landscapes, and forming deep connections with colleagues from diverse backgrounds. These seasonal friendships, unlike any she had experienced before, taught her valuable lessons about the various paths to success and the importance of surrounding oneself with positive influences.

Although initially met with skepticism from her family for straying from her engineering degree, Grace’s seasonal work experiences eventually garnered their support. She now works in international sales, a role that allows her to continue exploring the world. Despite the challenges and uncertainties, Grace cherishes the personal growth and newfound perspective on success that her unconventional career journey has provided her.

Her story serves as a reminder to embrace change, pursue dreams, and seek fulfillment in unconventional paths, as they may lead to unexpected opportunities and personal satisfaction.
