OpenAI recently organized an all-expenses-covered event for content creators at a picturesque resort in New York state. However, some attendees are now facing backlash from their followers for participating in a promotional trip funded by the tech company.

Critics raised concerns about influencers flaunting the luxurious natural surroundings, located in the Hudson Valley, amidst worries about the environmental impact of tech companies like OpenAI. There were also objections regarding OpenAI’s collaboration with the U.S. government, including the Department of War.

One influencer, Grace McCarrick, expressed surprise at the controversy surrounding her attendance at the brand trip to explore OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work tools. She shared her experience on LinkedIn, labeling it as “awesome” but was taken aback by the negative reception online.

According to experts, the backlash goes beyond the debate on artificial intelligence and reflects the evolving relationship between content creators, tech giants, and their followers. Victoria Ibitoye, founder of The Daily Influence, pointed out that the creator economy is grappling with where it stands regarding AI.

The event aimed to introduce content creators to ChatGPT Work, an AI tool for automating workplace tasks, and have them endorse the products to their existing audiences. However, this strategy backfired for some participants who faced criticism for their association with OpenAI.

Despite defending their involvement, influencers like Megan Lieu and Grace McCarrick faced harsh comments questioning their integrity and values. The incident highlighted the disconnect between public sentiments towards AI and its practical integration in content creation.

OpenAI’s influencer strategy is seen as a response to the negative perception surrounding generative AI technologies. The company’s proactive approach to engaging influencers stems from the need to improve its public image amid growing skepticism about the social impact of AI advancements.

The incident underscores the importance of transparency in influencer marketing and the delicate balance influencers must maintain between endorsing products and retaining their audience’s trust. Content creators must tread carefully to avoid compromising their credibility by aligning too closely with companies like OpenAI.
