A tragic incident unfolded as a man, Michael Lordson, aged 25, suddenly collapsed and passed away shortly after sending a text message to his girlfriend proclaiming it to be his “lucky day.” Michael, a father of two young daughters aged two and three, was at work in a Nevada casino on May 5 when the unfortunate incident occurred. Earlier that day, he had come across an abandoned joint, which he shared with his girlfriend via text.

Although no drugs were found on Michael, a coroner later confirmed that he had succumbed to fentanyl poisoning. Tamula Mercer, Michael’s biological grandmother who had adopted him at the age of two, expressed shock at the loss of her loved one to fentanyl, a substance claiming hundreds of lives daily across the US. She is now raising awareness about the hidden dangers of fentanyl, emphasizing how easily it can contaminate substances or surfaces, as she prepares to participate in a significant rally at the Washington Monument.

Tamula highlighted that Michael, employed as a maintenance worker at Riverside Casino in Laughlin, had excitedly messaged his girlfriend about finding the joint at work, deeming it his stroke of luck just hours before his sudden demise. Although Michael had mentioned his discovery to coworkers, it remains unknown if he had consumed the substance. Authorities investigating the scene found no drugs with him.

The devastating truth emerged from the coroner’s report, indicating that Michael had fallen victim to fentanyl poisoning. Health experts and activists in the US are sounding the alarm on fentanyl, a substance with lethal potency 50 times stronger than heroin, increasingly infiltrating various drugs and endangering casual users with the risk of overdose.

Tamula cautioned that fentanyl’s presence is no longer confined to traditional scenarios, where individuals knowingly consume substances, but rather it can lurk undetected on any surface. She shared a chilling account from the mayor of their town, highlighting the dire consequences of fentanyl exposure, even through the air.

Despite grappling with immense grief and health setbacks, Tamula is resolute in her mission to educate others about the perilous nature of fentanyl, aiming to prevent more families from enduring the same heart-wrenching loss she has faced. She emphasized the urgent need for awareness and vigilance to safeguard lives from the deadly threats posed by fentanyl.
