Ekow Essuman’s journey toward a world title opportunity has been marked by challenges within his training environment. The welterweight fighter has successfully bounced back after losing his British title two years ago. Notably, he secured a significant victory over former undisputed champion Josh Taylor in Scotland six months back, potentially paving the way for a shot at a major title by defeating Jack Catterall in the upcoming match.

The upcoming fight will be a part of the event supporting Chris Eubank Jr’s rematch with Conor Benn at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, expected to host up to 60,000 fans. Essuman, aged 36, is eager to compete in a safe and suitable boxing ring, contrasting with his previous training conditions that posed health risks due to maintenance issues at Nottingham’s DCT Boxing Academy.

The academy has faced persistent maintenance problems, with insufficient repairs causing ongoing issues for the tenants. Amidst these challenges, Essuman has remained focused on his boxing career aspirations, navigating through the difficulties posed by the gym’s conditions.

Essuman expressed concerns about the safety hazards at the gym, highlighting issues such as malfunctioning toilets, heating problems in the showers, and roof leaks leading to water puddles in the training area. Despite these obstacles, he and his team have managed to address the damages, including replacing the ring canvas, flooring, and equipment affected by water exposure.

While Essuman prepares for his upcoming fight, his community engagement activities at the gym have been temporarily suspended. The gym previously hosted various classes, including anti-knife workshops, kids’ sessions, and women’s classes, attracting a diverse group from the community. His absence from these community initiatives has also impacted his work in schools, where he uses boxing as a therapeutic tool to support children’s behavior improvement.

As Essuman approaches a critical juncture in his boxing career, he remains determined to face the challenges ahead, both in and out of the ring. His commitment to overcoming adversity reflects his resilience as he navigates through a career-defining moment, one step at a time.
