Dan Evans, a prominent figure in the Davis Cup, expressed his discontent in 2022 over not being chosen for the doubles event, hinting at the possibility of leaving the Great Britain team. Despite his successful involvement in the 2015 Davis Cup triumph, Evans felt slighted by the selection decision that excluded him from the doubles category, emphasizing that his lack of regular doubles play on tour should not be a determining factor.

In an interview with the i, Evans voiced his disappointment and perceived insult at never being picked to play doubles in the Davis Cup, emphasizing that his skills in doubles should not be underestimated based on tour rankings alone. He suggested that team selection should focus on playing styles rather than just doubles rankings to enhance performance.

Evans’ frustration peaked when he was left out of the doubles lineup at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals, where he had to solely participate in singles matches while his teammates, Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury, took on the doubles role. Despite expressing his desire to compete in the doubles matches, Evans remained puzzled by his continuous omission and contemplated his future involvement in the team.

In the subsequent year, Evans achieved his goal of playing in the doubles event alongside Skupski, securing a victory during the match against Colombia. Although Evans faced defeat in his singles match, Great Britain managed to advance to the Davis Cup Finals with a 3-1 win. Unfortunately, Evans missed the 2023 finale due to an injury.

Great Britain’s absence in the 2025 Davis Cup Finals followed their defeat to Japan in the initial qualifying round. Italy, led by Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli, advanced to the semi-finals after overcoming Austria. Berrettini’s victory against Jurij Rodionov and Cobolli’s win against Filip Misolic secured Italy a spot in the last four, setting up a showdown with Belgium.

This news comes as former Wimbledon runner-up Berrettini continues to showcase his prowess on the court, driving Italy towards success in the prestigious Davis Cup.
