The Conservative Party shop at this year’s conference in Manchester was filled with various Conservative-themed items, but one notable absence was any merchandise related to Kemi Badenoch. While products featuring former Tory Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and Winston Churchill were prominently displayed, there was a noticeable lack of items representing the current party leader. The celebration of Thatcher’s legacy was particularly evident, with cardboard cutouts, quotes, and even a museum dedicated to her iconic outfits. This focus on Thatcher can be attributed to the upcoming 100th anniversary of her birth, despite her passing in 2013.

Questions arise about the Tories’ fixation on the past, especially as they face challenges in present-day politics. While the party has introduced bold policy proposals, such as deporting migrants and cutting benefits, some of these ideas have been met with skepticism for their feasibility. However, when it comes to investing in conference decorations and merchandise, the party seems hesitant to embrace the future fully. The decision may stem from uncertainty about Badenoch’s leadership longevity, leading to a preference for traditional items seen in previous years.

Among the merchandise available are Thatcher-themed mugs and Christmas baubles, with slogans referencing her famous speeches. Busts of Ms. Thatcher, whisky bottles bearing her image, and various Tory-branded accessories are also on sale, catering to enthusiasts of the party’s history. Additionally, clothing items like ties, socks, and hoodies featuring the Tory logo are offered, alongside t-shirts mocking the opposition party’s tenure in office.

As the Conservative Party promotes British businesses, some products like hoodies made in Nicaragua and t-shirts manufactured in Morocco reflect a global sourcing approach. The t-shirts’ message could be interpreted as a humorous take on voting patterns, showcasing a blend of political commentary and party allegiance in the merchandise selection.
