A coroner has pointed out that well-known personalities who publicly announce their battle with cancer are inadvertently adding to the already long wait times and delays within the NHS system.
According to Senior Coroner Samantha Goward, while these celebrities are using their influence for a noble cause by encouraging people to seek medical attention if they have worrying symptoms, their disclosures are also leading to a surge in cancer referrals, thereby straining the NHS resources further.
The remarks from Goward come after the unfortunate passing of 83-year-old Michael Moore, who lost his life to incurable bladder cancer. Moore had to endure a nine-month wait for a biopsy, a delay that proved critical in the progression of his illness. The inquest revealed that a biopsy should have been conducted within 28 days of his referral, pointing to a missed opportunity for early treatment.
It was disclosed during the inquest that Moore had a history of prostate cancer and was flagged for a biopsy following an examination in 2023 that highlighted an abnormality. However, the biopsy got delayed for nine months until it was finally carried out when he was hospitalized as an emergency case. At that point, the medical team discovered the advanced and incurable bladder cancer, leading to palliative care being the only viable option.
While the outcome of earlier treatment remains uncertain given the specifics of Moore’s condition, Goward emphasized that timely biopsy could have presented treatment as a potential avenue.
In response to Moore’s case, Goward issued a report outlining concerns about the impact of celebrity disclosures on NHS operations. She highlighted ongoing efforts to reduce delays within the healthcare system but noted that a recent surge in cancer referrals, partly attributed to high-profile figures sharing their cancer journeys, has posed challenges. The surge in referrals has strained NHS resources, leading to significant delays in various stages of cancer care.
Notable personalities like King Charles, Princess of Wales, Jessie J, and Heather Peace have been open about their cancer battles in recent years, aiming to raise awareness and encourage prompt medical attention. Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay also joined the conversation by advocating for sun protection after undergoing treatment for basal cell carcinoma.
It is important to note that Goward did not single out any celebrities for criticism in her statements, nor did she discourage individuals from leveraging social media to promote healthcare awareness.
