An alert of significance has been issued to numerous Gmail users, prompting attention for those concerned about artificial intelligence scanning their emails. The recent cautionary message was shared online by Lori Greiner, a well-known American TV personality and entrepreneur.
Over the weekend, the star of Shark Tank posted a message on Instagram urging Gmail account holders to take note. The message emphasized the importance of sharing the information with friends and family to enhance overall protection.
The warning stems from Google’s introduction of new AI features aimed at analyzing emails to offer smart searches, contextual responses, and email summaries. While Google asserts that it does not read messages for personal use, Greiner expressed unease about the situation.
In her Instagram post, the celebrity emphasized the gravity of the situation for Gmail users. She highlighted that Google has been allowing AI to scan all emails, including sensitive information such as financial documents, tax details, and personal conversations without users’ knowledge.
However, there is a simple solution to address this concern. Greiner reassured followers that disabling this setting is a quick process that can be completed in 30 seconds. Users can deactivate AI in Gmail by following straightforward steps.
By accessing the Settings and selecting “see all settings,” users can then navigate to the “Smart features” section and disable these features for Gmail, Chat, and Meet. Additionally, users can manage Workspace Smart Features to further restrict data usage for AI by unchecking boxes for Workspace and other products.
Google maintains that personal data is never accessed by its team or third parties, ensuring the security of users’ information. The tech giant clarified that AI models, like Gemini, do not train on personal emails, and any access granted is for specific tasks only.
For individuals who are uncomfortable with AI scanning their emails, it is advisable to adjust the settings accordingly in Gmail.
