Nick Blaine’s fate in The Handmaid’s Tale explained

Must read

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 and The Testaments by Margaret Atwood

The sixth season of The Handmaid’s Tale marks the final chapter of the grim dystopian TV series, based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name.

The series is set to conclude the story of June Osborne (portrayed by Elisabeth Moss), with viewers eagerly awaiting to discover her fate and that of those aiding her, particularly Nick Blaine (Max Minghella).

Nick, who is June’s lover and now a Commander, finds himself in a tricky situation this season, torn between his loyalty to Gilead and his commitment to helping Mayday.

There are concerns that Nick may meet a tragic end this season when his true allegiance to June is revealed, especially considering the risks he’s taken by eliminating Guardians to ensure her safety, reports the Mirror US.

In the original Handmaid’s Tale novel, Nick assists June in her escape and collaborates with Mayday.

Atwood’s 2019 sequel, The Testaments, provides further insight into Nick’s fate.

The sequel is being adapted for television by the creators of The Handmaid’s Tale.

According to the book, Nick survives the perils of Gilead despite the risks he takes for June, and is eventually reunited with his daughter Nichole.

This suggests that Nick ultimately escapes Gilead for Canada to join June and Nichole.

However, it remains uncertain whether June chooses to be with Nick or her husband Luke Bankole (O-T Fagbenle).

In a thrilling development, both Nichole and Hannah Bankole (portrayed by Jordana Blake) find themselves back in the arms of their fathers.

Margaret Atwood’s sequel, The Testaments, reveals that Nick and June continue their covert operations with Mayday to dismantle Gilead. However, it’s Aunt Lydia’s (played by Ann Dowd) cunning plans that are set to play a pivotal role in toppling the oppressive regime once and for all.

Atwood has shared insights into her writing process, disclosing that she began penning The Testaments before the TV adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale even hit the screens.

Speaking to Oprah Daily, the Canadian novelist said: “So they were still writing, and so was I, so I continued through that period of time, through the third season.”

She added: “I was still writing when they were writing some of the third season. Luckily, I did keep in fairly close touch with Bruce Miller so there would be no flagrant contradictions.”

Atwood’s comments hint at a seamless integration between The Testaments and the television series, with fans eagerly anticipating the upcoming drama to align closely with the acclaimed author’s vision.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 will be coming to Prime Video and Channel 4 on May 3 in the UK
