UK shoppers rank best supermarket ice cream and it’s not Cornetto

Must read

Although ice creams aren’t seasonal, the feeling of eating an ice cream during the summertime is elite. A survey conducted by Which? revealed which is the best UK supermarket ice cream. You’ll be shocked to find that it’s not the iconic Cornetto, but a supermarket’s own brand.

Cornettos are a freezer favourite, and a reminder of our childhood. But a recent taste test has revealed that shoppers can get their hands on a delicious alternative for nearly half the price.

The blind taste included brands from eight different supermarkets, including Lidl, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Asda, Iceland and Morrisons, as well as other bigger brands. The results revealed a three-way tie-up at the top, with Asda, Lidl and Morrisons receiving 77% for overall satisfaction.

As reported by the site, the ice cream cones were tested in June 2024 by 68 people. The overall score was based on flavour (50%), appearance (25%), texture (15%) and aroma (10%). The taste was blind, meaning people didn’t know which brand they were trying.

It explained: “The order in which they tasted the ice creams was fully rotated to avoid any bias. Each person had a private booth, so they couldn’t discuss what they were tasting or be influenced by others.”

Nonetheless, Lidl’s Bon Getali Ice Cream Cones in the flavours of strawberry and vanilla took the first spot as tasters were not only satisfied with its taste, but also the price. The site said: “The majority thought they were the perfect level of creamy and sweet, had a good amount of strawberry sauce, and the flavour was just right.”

On the other hand, Cornetto had a 65% for overall satisfaction, with less than half being happy about the amount of strawberry sauce, and some even saying that the flavour was too weak.

Despite some thinking the cone from Lidl’s Bon Gelati Ice Cream Cones in the flavour of strawberry and vanilla ice cream could be crunchier, it still took the crown as the best supermarket ice cream in the country. Shoppers can get their hands on the delicious ice cream at their local Lidl stores, costing £1.99 for a pack of six ice creams, saving £1.76 compared to Cornetto’s brand.

This means shoppers don’t necessarily have to purchase more expensive brands to get the best products. Alternatively, opting for low-cost and supermarket-branded items can lead to the best finds – and in this case, it did happen.
