Gardeners urged to buy 24p supermarket vegetable and watch it multiply in soil

Must read

If you’re looking for gardening inspiration this spring, then you might want to give this popular kitchen vegetable a try. A gardening expert has revealed how you can easily grow garlic in your garden using just one bulb.

Both loved and hated for its strong odour, garlic is a staple ingredient in kitchens around the world. It adds an instant sharp taste to even the most simple dishes, from pasta to curries. Plus, it’s even delicious when used as the main star. Think doughy garlic bread, salty garlic chips and even a warm hearty bowl of garlic soup.

Given its versatility, garlic can be a great plant to start growing in your garden. Not only will it save you money, you can trust that it doesn’t contain any nasty pesticides.

Popular gardening influencer Simon Akeroyd posted a video on TikTok, captioned, “Grow garlic from the supermarket.” In it, he proceeds to demonstrate how he cultivates his own crop of garlic using a bulb from the supermarket.

First, he instructs viewers to peel the flaky outer shell from the garlic. This allows the softer pulp of the vegetable, which contains its vital nutrients, to be exposed.

He then places the bulb in a bowl of water until it is almost fully submerged, then leaves it. After about four to seven days, the garlic bulb will have sprouted green and white shoots.

“You now have free garlic plants,” he says in the video. While they may look quite strange, the individual clove of the bulb can now be separated and planted individually in the soil.

He advises that the bulbs should be planted about 15 centimetres apart from each other to give them ample room to grow. The cloves will then develop into their own bulbs. And voila, you have your very own garlic.

Commenters were quick to show their appreciation for the money-saving gardening tip. “Fantastic my friend. Can’t beat your own grown food,” one wrote.

Others attested to the effectiveness of the hack. One user chimed in: “I did what you said and it worked! I’ve never been able to grow anything, thank you!”

Another asked how long it takes to grow the garlic. Simon replied: “If you do this [in April] you should have garlic to harvest between mid and late summer this year.”

You probably have garlic already lying around in your cupboard. However, don’t worry if not. You can pick up a bulb from Sainsbury’s for a bargain 24p.
