California has been rocked by a massive earthquake which rattled locals have described as the “biggest they have ever felt”.
The US Geological Survey says the tremor, said to be a 5.2 magnitude, struck northeast of San Diego County in Julian, and around seven after shocks were felt afterwards.
One person who lives in the area said: “That was the biggest earthquake I’ve felt since moving to San Diego.”

The San Diego earthquake has dominated headlines across the UK this evening, with dramatic footage coming from across the pond showing violent shaking in the California community.

Seven aftershocks were recorded following today’s magnitude 5.2 earthquake ranging from magnitudes 2.5 to 4.

A born-and-raised San Diego resident has said today’s earthquake was the worst he has ever experienced in his life.
Speaking to the BBC, Kevin Manaugh said he was eating breakfast when the alert came through his phone. He immediately took shelter under a door frame in his home and “the quaking started to happen”
He said: “I’ve lived in San Diego most of my life, I was born here, and this is probably the worst quake that I’ve ever felt.” He added: “It was a bit shocking. Everything shook, it shook a lot. It rattled around and lasted maybe three seconds, and then it was over.
New footage from San Diego has captured the moment dogs reacted to the tremors caused by today’s earthquake.
The San Diego county police and local sherriff’s department have not received immediate reports of injuries or deaths in the wake of the earthquake.
Firefighters have also not reported any damage, with most people posting on social media saying they experienced little more than light shaking that knocked over some items.
Locals have given people experiencing an earthquake for the first time advice after they were caught in the tremors this afternoon.
One social media user posting on X said he “grabbed his son and ran for the door” after the earthquake started, but was told by another that he would “never run for a doorway”. He said: “Haven’t ever experienced an earthquake. But I lived around sinkholes and I just grabbed my son and ran for the door in my boxers. Heart in my a**.”
The other user said in response: “Never run for a doorway in an earthquake you duck and cover immediately. We all felt it.”
Earthquake seismographs stationed across California have captured the moment the tremors struck and their intensity in five major cities: Anaheim, Long Beach, Los Angeles, San Bernardino and San Diego.
The USGS states on its earthquake “pager” that most people living in the are where the earthquake struck today live and work in buildings that are largely “resistant to earthquake shaking”.
The report states: “Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are unreinforced brick masonry and reinforced masonry construction.”
A San Diego resident has posted footage showing the moment the earthquake struck today, with items in their room seen shakingas the tremors exploded across California.
