Brits plotting staycations this summer might want to earmark a day for a stunning beach located near one of the UK’s favourite seaside spots. Bournemouth, with its iconic pier, vibrant nightlife and expansive sandy beaches, has always been a hit with holidaymakers.
However, just a half-hour drive away lies a lesser-known but equally beautiful stretch of coastline that deserves attention. Hengistbury Head Beach may not be a secret, but it often gets overshadowed by tourists flocking to Bournemouth beach. A study by Cinch, however, ranked it among the top 20 UK beaches for spring, thanks to its pleasant temperatures, Instagrammable views, and amenities like parking and local fish and chip shops.
This picturesque location – a blend of shingle and sand – clinched ninth place in the rankings.
With its shallow waters perfect for paddling, breathtaking clifftop vistas (though steer clear of the cliff edge due to rockfall risk), and fewer crowds than other popular spots, it’s easy to see why.
The beach also features a cafe and visitor centre, though visitors should note there are no lifeguards on duty. Dog owners will be pleased to know their furry friends are welcome year-round, provided they’re kept on a lead.
Tripadvisor users are also singing praises for one of England’s top beaches, awarded the 11th place among the nation’s finest sandy stretches. Contented holidaymakers have shared their experiences, testifying to its allure as a staycation gem.
One visitor remarked: “If you want to get out and about in the fresh air, this is the place to go and on the plus side it is very dog friendly. On a clear day it has a great view of the area.”
A different user enthusiastically recounted: “Amazing views on a sunny day! Perfect for a nice family/dog walk! We came here last weekend and the sun was shining. Walked along down to Mudeford and back up along the beach in a circular route.
“They have dog water available along the walk which is such a lovely touch! Stopped for a Pimms and pizza (although queues and wait times are usually long)! Can hop on a boat to Christchurch too! We will be back.”
Adding to the accolades, another person highlighted: “Great walks with spectacular views. Take the opportunity to explore this area from either end maybe cross from the Mudeford end on the ferry or vice versa, plenty of parking. Great part of the country to visit.”
