Jamie Redknapp hit with driving ban as Sky Sports pundit racks up speeding offences

Must read

Football pundit and former England international Jamie Redknapp has been handed a 12-month driving ban for speeding. The 51-year-old was previously banned for six months over speeding offences, and has now been handed a longer punishment.

The former Liverpool and Tottenham star did not appear at Bexley Magistrates Court for his hearing. He pleaded guilty in advance, after being seen doing 58mph in a 50mph zone, and this plea was taken into consideration when issuing the ban.

In addition to his driving ban, Redknapp has been ordered to pay a £146 fine, as well as costs of £100 to the London Metropolitan police and £58 surcharge. Mirror Football understands a collection order has been issued for that sum, with a payment deadline of May 12 this year.

Back in 2015, Redknapp was handed a driving ban for speeding on the motorway. That offence took place on the M5, between junction 11 and junction 10.

On that occasion, he was fined £700 and told to pay costs of £75 and an £80 victim surcharge. He pleaded guilty at that hearing at Staines Magistrates’ Court.

Redknapp spent much of his playing career in the Premier League after starting out at Bournemouth. He played more than 200 top-flight games for Liverpool and later turned out for Spurs and Southampton before retiring in 2005.

He also played 17 times for England’s senior team, and was part of the squad which reached the semi-finals of Euro 96. His only senior international goal came in a friendly against Belgium in 1999.

Since hanging up his boots in 2005, Redknapp has had an active media career. Much of it has come with Sky Sports, where he has regularly provided analysis for the broadcaster’s live Premier League coverage.

He has also been a regular on Sky’s panel show ‘A League of Their Own’, which first broadcast on Sky One back in 2010. Former England cricketer Freddie Flintoff was his rival team captain on the first few seasons on the show, while Lionesses star Jill Scott has now joined the line-up.

Redknapp comes from a footballing family, with father Harry managing several Premier League clubs and cousin Frank Lampard playing for Chelsea and England. His uncle, Frank Lampard Sr, was also an England international and spent most of his playing career with West Ham United.
