‘I gave husband positive pregnancy test for his birthday – I can’t believe reaction’

Must read

A woman decided to surprise her husband with a positive pregnancy test for his birthday, but his reaction wasn’t quite what she had expected.

Couples often feel full of joy after finding out they will be having a baby, especially if they have been trying to conceive for a long time. However, this wasn’t the case for one pair.

A mum-to-be took to Reddit to share that she and her husband had wanted a baby for a very long time. So when she found out she was pregnant, she was so excited that she decided to keep it a secret and reveal the news to him on his birthday, three days later, hoping this would make it more shocking or exciting.

However, when he opened the little box containing the pregnancy test, he told his wife it was a “stupid gift.” In her post, she explained that she had planned a “chill and intimate” birthday party where she would have a nice dinner with her husband and he would open his gifts so it was “not going to be a big party with tons of people.”

With this in mind, she didn’t think surprising him with the pregnancy test would be a problem at all. No one else would be there besides her and her husband and she acknowledged that if it was a big party she wouldn’t have done it as thus “would’ve taken the entire focus off him.”

She added: “When it came for me to give him his gifts, the pregnancy test was in a small box and I told him to open it last. He was super happy with all of his gifts, and when he opened the box with the pregnancy test in it, his demeanour changed.

“He seemed upset. I asked what was wrong and he said it was ‘a stupid gift’ and ‘how could you hide something like this from me? You knew this for so long and hid it??’

The Reddit user added that she thought it would be a “wonderful gift” and she thought her husband would be happy, considering how long they have wanted to have a baby. Unfortunately, he told her that he was happy but the timing she chose to tell him was “horrible” and that it was his birthday, not a celebration of pregnancy.

This led to her feeling “confused, hurt, upset” and the couple had a fight which ended with the husband sleeping on the couch that night. She continued: “This past week, he hasn’t talked to me too much.

“Whenever I try to bring it up he says ‘just stop, we’re past it. It was dumb of you.’ Stuff like that. He doesn’t tell me how happy he is, or any celebration about us being pregnant. Whenever I talk to him, he doesn’t really reply, it’s just yes or no, or a grunt.”

She ended her post by admitting that she feels “horrible” and “didn’t think this would be a bad gift.” The expectant mother asked others on the platform if she was in the wrong for giving her husband the positive pregnancy test as his birthday gift.

Her Reddit post has racked up 2,300 upvotes and 1,700 comments in less than a day. The top comment is: “I think he didn’t actually want kids” but after reading some of the responses to her post, the woman provided some ‘updates’, including the information that she and her husband have been married for four years and “agreed from the start about wanting children.”

Another user added: “I gave my husband a positive pregnancy test for Christmas. He was excited and happy.

“I’d be super concerned about this guy’s reaction. He is concerned about a pregnancy test taking attention from him?

“What does he think a baby will do? By the nature of the care they need, a baby will get much more attention than him. Sounds like he’s a baby that needs to grow up.”
