Ederson has provided his fourth assist of the Premier League campaign by setting up James McAtee for Manchester City ’s fourth goal in their 5-2 win against Crystal Palace – and no goalkeeper has ever provided more than two in a season.
The Brazilian stopper’s feed to McAtee is also the eighth by a goalkeeper in 2024-25, the joint-most in a single season in the competition along with 1992-93 and 2007-08, as per Opta.
It was also the seventh assist of Ederson’s Premier League career. Paul Robinson is the goalkeeper with the next highest assists in Premier League history on five. Arsenal legend David Seaman and ex-Liverpool man Pepe Reina recorded three each.
Palace had led 2-0 at the Etihad thanks to early goals from Eberechi Eze and Chris Richards but City, still chasing a top five finish to secure a place in next season’s Champions League, came back into the game thanks to a goal from the soon to depart Kevin De Bruyne.
January signing Omar Marmoush then made it 2-2 before the break. And De Bruyne turned creator for Mateo Kovacic to complete City’s comeback before Ederson then found McAtee with a long pass to double the advantage. Nico O’Reilly added a fifth to secure the win.
It was not all joy for City’s No1, however, because he had to be subbed off because of what appeared to be a groin injury with about 20 minutes to play. He hobbled off with some assistance from the hosts’ medical team and was replaced by Stefan Ortega.
City moved up to fourth with the win – before the rest of the weekend’s action got underway and asked about Ederson’s assists McAtee told TNT Sports: “He can kick it dead far. He’s got a great pass so when I saw the defence was high up I just tried to get between them and the goal.
“I don’t think we deserved to be 2-0 down. I think I missed a few chances early on and the game just got away from us a little bit. We were playing well anyway, we knew the goals were going to come and they did.
“Obviously we wanted to prove a point and show that we were committed and want to finish in the Champions League spots.”
