‘My husband has chosen food-themed baby name – our child will sound like a hippy’

Must read

Naming a baby isn’t always as easy as it sounds – especially when the parents have different ideas about what sounds good.

That’s exactly the issue one couple are up against after the husband shared his intention to name their new-born son after a herb.

Taking to Reddit, the woman, who is 37 weeks pregnant, said: “My first born is named Lily (Lillian) which was a family name.

“One name on my husband’s side that we liked is Basil but we worry about always having to say ‘like the herb’ or people thinking that we’re hippies.

“Any thoughts or advice? We also liked the idea of having two kids with nature names.”

Wanting to know how it could impact her child later in life, she has taken to social media to ask users for their thoughts.

She added: “We also like the name Max. Not sure about what form to take it for the full name though.”

Commenting on her post, one user simply said: “Personally I’d scrap Basil and go with Max.”

Another user added: “Hate it. Do not do it. There are thousands of names to choose from and I’ll never understand how this one is at the top of anyone’s list.”

A third user said: “I definitely only think of the herb when I see that (in Canada for reference).”

One more user added: “I sort of dig Basil and prefer it to Max. Basil the name and basil the herb are pronounced differently, though, so I don’t think telling people ‘like the herb’ will do you much good.”

A final user said: “Basil is a guinea pigs or pony’s name. I agree it sounds good but its a bit too unusual if I’m honest.”

It comes after a woman shared her horror after learning her best friend wanted to name her daughter after the month she was born.

Taking to Reddit, she said: “My best friend recently found out she is having a girl. This is a dream come true for her. Her daughter’s room is fixed up gorgeous. My bestie is basking in her pregnancy glow and I love it for her.

“So last time I was over there, we started discussing her due date which is mid-July. She said she was thinking of July-based names. I warn you these are all cringe. Rubeigh, Jewelie, Dyeanah, or Liberteigh.

“I’m very worried for this poor innocent child who’s due in a little over three and a half months.”

In response, a woman who has an ‘unusual’ name, describing it as a ‘tragedeigh name’ due to its spelling, shared how it has impacted her throughout her life.

She said: “I will let you know that as a child I wished my parents spelled it the ‘normal’ way.

“Now, I love my name, but that is only because I’m used to pretty much every person spelling it wrong, even when I tell them how to spell it, if it’s written on a legal document they are looking at, or if they have known me for years. I have to ignore it or I’d be upset every day of my life.”
