Mac and cheese tastes instantly better by adding one simple 60p ingredient

Must read

There’s something about mac and cheese that just makes you want to curl up and indulge and its creamy, comforting goodness. But there’s one secret ingredient that will elevate your dish ten times more and it’s probably already in your fridge.

Mac and cheese is rich in flavour, and one of those dishes that it’s best to leave untouched once you’ve found the perfect way to make it. However, experimenting can always find new favourite tastes, and including this unexpected ingredient happens to do so.

Originally from a town in the Burgundy region of France, Dijon mustard is known for its unique flavour. When added to the mac and cheese, it binds together a vinaigrette, helping to keep the cheese sauce stable as it bakes.

Enhancing the mac and cheese, its less sweet flavour compared to using a yellow mustard helps to balance the cheesy flavour without making the sauce taste strongly of mustard.

Making mac and cheese can take anywhere between 25 to 40 minutes, depending on the quantity and how it’s been cooked. The preparation time usually takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes, with cooking time taking between 15 to 30 minutes.

To make mac and cheese, you only need macaroni, butter, cheese, milk, butter, seasonings and of course, the star ingredient, Dijon mustard. If you don’t have it in your fridge, it’s available to purchase at any UK supermarket, with prices starting at 60p depending on the brand.

To begin with, start by boiling and drain the macaroni according to the box instructions. Then, melt the butter in a skillet and sprinkle flour, stirring until it becomes a pasty consistency.

Once done, whisk in warmed milk and let it cook until the sauce thickens, topping it up with Dijon mustard. Finally, add cheese to the sauce, the pasta, and serve!

You can also experiment with different types of cheese, such as mozzarella and cheddar, or even both. This will help achieve the perfect creamy texture and flavour.

The best thing about cooking is that you don’t need to be an experienced chef from the start, and can play around with different ingredients until you find the perfect recipe. Plus, it’s a fun way to spend some time with your loved ones. Enjoy your homemade mac and cheese – you’ll thank me later.
