Underrated European island 4 hours from UK where colourful houses line the beach

Must read

If you want to beat the crowds this summer, there are few islands more magical than the Greek paradise of Milo. Distinctive for its white coastline and volcanic landscape, the island is also best known for one unique feature: the syrmata.

‘Syrmata’, or fishermen’s houses, are single-room shelters denoted by their colourful doors and compact, semi-underground structure. Once used to store boats during the winter, they are arranged ornamentally along the natural contours of the shoreline – almost appearing as a natural part of the landscape. The syrmata are the remaining legacy of the island’s original Spartan inhabitants, who came at some time in the seventh century BC.

Most frequently found in the north and eastern parts of the island, many of the quaint structures have been converted into tourist accommodations. However, the Greek government has recently given the remaining syrmata a protected status to protect their unique aesthetic and historical value.

General Secretary for the Aegean and Island Policy Manolis Koutoulakis explained their importance, and said: “The ‘syrmata’ are an image closely tied to Milos, a part of the island’s intangible cultural heritage. They are fine examples of local architectural tradition and landmarks of the island.”

Aside from these stunning houses, Milos offers visitors many exciting lures. Located in the Cyclades, the island boasts azure views of the Aegean from otherworldly beaches and unique vantage points.

Much of its beauty comes from its natural features. Along the coast, Milos’ white volcanic rock twists and bends into exotic contortions, making it seem as though you have landed on another planet entirely. There are plenty of secluded coves and majestic cliff faces from which you can admire the unparalleled views.

Even better, it offers a more peaceful retreat compared to thronged destinations like Santorini or Mykonos – both of which recently had to implement measures to curb extreme overtourism. Meanwhile, visitors to Milos can enjoy its beaches without having to fight for space.

Some of Milos’ most beautiful beaches include Sarakaniko and Firiplaka, which allow holidaymakers to luxuriate under the hot Greek sun. For those looking for an even quieter escape, Kalogries is accessible only by boat and boasts some of the island’s best snorkelling.

On TripAdvisor, one visitor to Sarakaniko beach compared the scenery to something from outer space. They wrote: “Really out of this world moon like landscape.”

Another described it: “This breathtaking place is out of this world! Perfect for making pictures, enjoy this unique scenery.”

Inland, the island contains even more treasures. Its beautiful white-washed villages appear as though they have been sculpted into the rocks themselves. Atop a hill, you can also find Plaka Castle – a remnant of the islands past Venetian rule.

Foodies will also be delighted to discover the wealth of restaurants available. Most serve traditional Greek food as well as a variety of seafood options. Visitors must also try the island’s unique cheese, which is made with local goat’s milk.

While there are no direct flights to Milos from the UK, travellers can fly in to Athens, which takes just under four hours. Ferries regularly run between Athens and Milos, typically taking about three and a half hours.
