Michael Fabricant baffled Celebrity Big Brother viewers when he insisted he “doesn’t like to talk” about his hair. The former Conservative MP, 74, was quizzed about his blonde locks by Patsy Palmer during Thursday night’s show.
He was probed about his infamous do as the EastEnders actress asked: “Michael is there a reason that you wear that? That you wear a wig?” Michael replied: “I just have always had long blonde hair so I just feel comfortable.”
Patsy continued to probe as she asked: “‘Yeah, so not because you are bald or?…” He hit back: “No not particularly no, just because I’m… I don’t particularly like talking about it but it’s just how I want to be. It’s part of me.”
Despite him appearing uncomfortable about his locks, Patsy wanted to know how long his hair used to be and if it was blonde or ginger. The topic seemed to hit a nerve for Michael as he nominated Pasty for eviction because of her questioning.
In the Diary Room, he said: “I really have found it very hard but I’m going to nominate Patsy. She asked me something about ‘Why do I wear a wig?’ and you know, I’m not saying it is a wig, actually, but what I am saying is I found it slightly awkward being asked about it. I just don’t like my hair being raised.
“People have, you know, sensitivities and that’s my sensitivity. Look, we’re all human. I’m more human than most.” However, on Monday night as he entered the house Michael did reveal his hair is a wig for the first time.
Michael decided to settle talk around his bleach blonde locks before they had even began. He previously denied his do is a hairpiece, but said it has been a little ‘enhanced’.
The politician had only ever spoken once about the tweaks to his famous thatch to the the Mirror back in 2014. Insisting he doesn’t wear a wig, he told us: “It’s a lot more complicated than that.
“OK, all I will admit to is that there is some – but only some – enhancement of the follicular area.” He refused to say whether the “enhancement” had applied to the middle or sides of his scalp, or all over.
Michael finally settled the chatter around his locks in a cheeky comment. Speaking in his VT before entering Celebrity Big Brother where he was met by boos, he issued a 10-word statement.
He said: “I can show you the receipts, it cost a fortune.” The remark seemed to confirm his hair is actually a wig that he purchased rather than grew himself.
His hair was even discussed in Prime Minister’s Questions back in 2019. Michael had seen social media posts about Huw Merriman mocking him when he was caught on camera muttering “definitely a wig” to Kelly Tolhurst, the MP sitting next to him.
The clip found its way onto social media, and was spotted by Michael who was far from amused by what he had seen. Michael later told the BBC: “Huw is pretty short-sighted, he’s a relatively new member of Parliament – bless – he didn’t know that PMQs is actually televised. And I’m sure if he did, he would have behaved in a more grown-up way.”
