The One Show was halted for a death announcement on Thursday (April 10) as the hosts sent well wishes to family members.
During today’s episode of the hit BBC programme, Lauren Laverne and JB Gill discussed the latest headlines and spoke to guests Beverley Knight, Harlan Coben and Nick Grimshaw.
Midway through the broadcast, the pair paid tribute to a recent recipient of the show’s One Big Thank You, who had sadly passed away.
Each week, the show praises someone who has gone the extra mile to help others in their community.
“Before we introduce you to this week’s star, we unfortunately have some sad news to share,” JB began.
“Last week, you may remember we thanked Brenda, who raised over £170,000 for research into cancer treatment while dealing with her own cancer diagnosis. And this week, we heard the very sad news that Brenda has died,” Lauren added.
“So on behalf of everyone at The One Show, we want to say to all of Brenda’s family and friends that our thoughts and our love are with you, and we feel very lucky to have been able to celebrate the amazing work that she did. That is what One Big Thank You is all about.”
During last Thursday’s (April 3) show, hosts Alex Jones and Angellica Bell shared why Brenda deserved One Big Thank You.
In 2000, Brenda was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a traumatic time for her and her family, but she decided that she wanted to help others in a similar situation – all while she was recovering.
Once she was in remission, Brenda began hosting charity balls at a local venue, as well as afternoon teas, garden parties and sponsored walks which have hosted over 100 people.
Recently, Brenda was diagnosed with cancer for a second time. With limited treatment options available to her, she took a step back, but not before she hosted her 15th charity ball.
“The last month has been a real trial for our family, for Brenda and for her friends, really,” said Brenda’s friend Nigel, with another friend Tony adding: “She’s an amazing lady, she’s just one in a million.”
The One Show gave Brenda a special day to celebrate her fundraising efforts, and enlisted Strictly Come Dancing star Kai Widdrington to surprise her with a party in Cornwall.
