Largest-ever auction of Princess Diana’s iconic wardrobe as more than 200 items go under the hammer

Must read

Over 200 personal items belonging to Diana, Princess of Wales, along with some “ultra-rare” items belonging to other British royals are set to hit the auction block this summer.

The sale is part of an event by Julien’s Auctions called Princess Diana’s Style & A Royal Collection, scheduled for Thursday, June 26 which will provide a unique glimpse into a significant period of history. Prospective buyers can start placing their bids from May 20, with the auction featuring a variety of Diana’s clothing, celebrating her iconic fashion sense and aiming to preserve her enduring legacy.

Martin Nolan, co-founder and executive director of Julien’s Auctions, expressed his company’s honour in curating the collection: “Princess Diana holds a special place in the heart of Julien’s Auctions, and we are honoured to continue to preserve her legacy telling her story through the pieces that defined her elegance, grace, glamour and spirit.”

He further described the significance of the collection: “This collection is the most significant offering of her wardrobe ever presented at auction, each item a window into a moment in history and a tribute to a woman whose humility and style and personal warmth continues to inspire the world.”

The auction will also feature Royal garments and artefacts spanning British history, including pieces once worn by the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Queen Elizabeth II, the Queen Mother, and other royals, some dating back to the 19th century.

Julien’s Auctions has a history of fetching high prices for Diana’s memorabilia, having previously sold one of her dresses for a staggering 1.14 million US dollars (£889,000) and a pair of her shoes for 390,000 US dollars (£304,000). A number of other items once belonging to Diana have previously been sold at auction, including her Ford Escort, which she owned in the 80s, that sold at auction for £650,000 and a photo of Princess Diana as a 16-year-old bridesmaid at her sister’s wedding in 1978 fetched £7,000.

Before the auction kicks off, the Museum of Pop Culture (Mopop) is teaming up with Julien’s Auctions to showcase an exhibition where fans can get an up-close look at the items on offer.

Michele Y Smith, Mopop’s chief executive, commented: “This collection celebrates Princess Diana’s enduring influence as a cultural and fashion icon. Her style, grace, and humanitarian spirit continue to resonate across generations.”

The exhibit will also travel to The Museum of Style Icons (Mosi) in Newbridge, Ireland, where it will be displayed from mid-May to mid-June 2025. A slice of the proceeds from the sale of Diana’s memorabilia will go to Muscular Dystrophy UK.

The much-anticipated auction is set to take place on Thursday June 26 at 10:00am Pacific Time at The Peninsula Beverly Hills.
