Must read

Tesco will close more than 800 of its larger stores on Easter Sunday (April 20) although its smaller Express and Metro stores will stay open. Large shops over 280 square meters are required by law to close on Easter Sunday.

Smaller shops can stay open, although may normally reduce their opening times. There are two bank holidays on Easter weekend and they are Good Friday, which falls on April 18 this year, and Easter Monday, which is April 21. The majority of large Tesco stores in England and Wales and the will be open from 6am to 10pm on Good Friday, with normal hours resuming on Easter Saturday.

Then on Easter Monday, most large Tesco stores across in England and Wales will be open from 8am to 6pm. Trading rules are different in Scotland, where stores are allowed to stay open on Easter Sunday. Most larger stores will open under normal hours for Good Friday and Easter Sunday, but there will be reduced hours of 8am to 10pm on Easter Monday.

A spokesperson said: “Our opening hours over the Easter period vary by location, so we advise customers to check their local store opening times on our store locator. This is also the best place to check for Petrol Filling Station opening times, as these can vary from main store opening hours.”

Asda has also confirmed that its larger stores will be closed on Easter Sunday, although its smaller convenience Asda Express convenience stores will remain open. Asda has 580 larger supermarket stores, alongside around 500 convenience stores across the country.

It comes after it was reported Tesco is trialling replacing product barcodes with QR codes. It is believed the retailer will test the digital innovation, which is still being developed, across 12 own-brand fresh produce and meat products, according to Retail Gazette. Tesco is said to be working with ten suppliers to test the new technology.

Reports suggest Tesco will start testing the QR code packaging in around 20% of its store estate in the South of England – however, details on specific stores taking part in the trial are yet to be confirmed. The move would allow shoppers to scan a QR code to access information on the product they’re considering buying. This may include nutritional information and where the item was sourced.

Tesco has already introduced QR codes to many of its stores – but not on products. Customers who have a Clubcard can scan their QR code and scan their shopping on-the-go using the portable handsets. Once you’re done, all you need to do is scan a QR code at the till which will total up all of your items.
