Good Morning Britain viewers were greeted with a breaking news announcement on Wednesday (9 April) morning as another episode of the popular ITV show aired.
Presented by Ed Balls and Ranvir Singh, the programme was interrupted in the first hour for an update on the tariff increases imposed by US President Donald Trump.
The White House declared that it has slapped tariffs of 104 percent on most Chinese goods imported into America. This hike follows Beijing’s retaliation against Trump’s previous tariff increases.
However, GMB viewers made it clear they weren’t interested in the news, with many expressing their views on social media.
One viewer posted on X: “I don’t care what the so-called experts say, every country should slap a ban on American goods,” while another chimed in: “Donald Trump is the president of the US. would be better for focusing on our own leaders and their actions. #gmb.”
“Endless speculation stories on tariffs and theme parks on #GMB and no actual news,” a third GMB fan commented, while another remarked: “Has GMB always been this level of utter drivel? #gmb.”
GMB’s North American correspondent Noel Phillips provided the latest tariff updates for GMB viewers, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Reporting live from New York, Noel informed viewers: “What we’re witnessing right now is one of the most dramatic confrontations in international politics in modern times. The two most powerful men in the world, facing off against each other.”
Noel disclosed some concerning numbers from the New York Stock Exchange before letting slip that Donald Trump has ominously forecasted further tariffs, possibly hitting the pharmaceutical supply chain next.
“As I’ve been finding out, there is a real sense of anxiety and dread about what’s to come,” Noel admitted.
On Tuesday, Trump revealed that his government is negotiating “tailored deals” with certain trade partners. The White House also discussed prioritising allies, naming Japan and South Korea as frontrunners for these bespoke agreements.
Trump’s tariffs on various economies went live on Wednesday (9 April), with China feeling the brunt. Despite this, Trump has issued a battle cry to carry on the trade war “to the end,” teeing up a series of countermeasures.
Following suit, on Thursday (10 April), China will activate its hefty 34 percent tariffs on American goods.
Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays on ITV1 at 6am
