Baked beans are a staple food for many British households, but not many know about this hack that will elevate your dish by adding extra flavour. You might love or hate it, but you should still give it a try.
Baked beans are the type of food that can be much tastier when mixed with other ingredients. However, there’s an ingredient that could become quite controversial, and it’s one that you might’ve never considered adding before.
As part of the British breakfast, they usually come in a sweet tomato sauce. They can be enjoyed straight from the tin, but they can also be spiced up by adding some Worcestershire sauce. Yes, you’ve read that right.
Baked beans are extremely popular in the UK, and can be eaten with salt, pepper, paprika and even chili flakes for some extra flavour – and the whole mixture can also be accompanied by a warm jacket potato.
Although it might sound criminal to some, adding Worcestershire sauce can elevate the dish. Ganz from Simply Recipes told The Express: “Worcestershire sauce gives my baked beans a certain je ne sais quoi that makes them sing.”
Ganz raved: “Worcestershire sauce is a fantastic kitchen-sink condiment for building layers of flavour in savoury dishes, especially beans.”
Worcestershire sauce is made from anchovies, garlic, soy sauce, shallows, tamarind, vinegar and salt. Traditionally, it’s used for marinades and dressings, as well as a dipping sauce for dishes like burgers and steaks.
To make this unusual but delicious dish, Ganz said to use Worcestershire sauce with ketchup and brown sugar, which turns it into a similar sauce from a can of baked beans from a supermarket.
A Reddit user gave it a go with a toast and recommended it to others to try – and the reaction was quite positive. One said: “This is God tier beans on toast! Yum!,” with a second one adding: “The lunch of true scholars. Next time, try mixing Reggae reggae sauce into the bean sauce, it makes it deliciously spicy.”
A third user suggested: “Try it with sriracha sauce next time,” with a fourth one commenting: “I’d swap the Worcestershire sauce for black pepper.”
Next time you open a can of baked beans for your English breakfast or jacket potato, you might want to consider trying this unexpected savoury fusion! Who knows, you might end up liking it.
