Connor Hellebuyck, the goaltender for the Winnipeg Jets, a decorated player with an Olympic gold medal and three Vezina trophies, has made a public trade request.

After months of speculation about his future, Hellebuyck confirmed his trade request in a statement released by his agent on Thursday. He shared that he had privately asked the Jets for a trade some months ago and has been handling the situation discreetly to give the team time to consider its options.

Expressing the importance of transparency with training camp approaching, Hellebuyck stated that he believes moving on is the best decision for himself and his family. Despite his appreciation for the support of Winnipeg Jets fans, he hopes for a swift resolution.

Originating from Michigan, Hellebuyck achieved a remarkable milestone in the 2024-25 NHL season by being named both the league’s MVP and top goalie, leading the Jets to their first-ever best record in franchise history.

Jets’ general manager, Kevin Cheveldayoff, acknowledged Hellebuyck’s desire for a change and praised his contributions to the team over the years. Cheveldayoff emphasized the team’s respect for Hellebuyck’s achievements and assured a thoughtful approach to the evolving situation.

Hellebuyck reflected on his journey since being drafted by the Jets in 2012 and highlighted his dedication to proving himself since then. Notably, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from U.S. President Donald Trump for his outstanding performance in the Olympic gold-medal game earlier this year.

A five-time Vezina Trophy finalist, Hellebuyck’s trade request marks a significant development in his career trajectory.
