NDP Leader Avi Lewis launched a series of meetings with his parliamentary caucus by accusing the Carney government of neglecting everyday Canadians. Lewis criticized the government’s preference for prioritizing powerful corporations over the needs of regular citizens. He and his five NDP MPs convened in Toronto to engage with union representatives, affordable housing advocates, and food bank leaders. At a press conference with these stakeholders, Lewis emphasized the government’s significant financial allocations for projects like a new West Coast pipeline and military investments, highlighting the lack of attention to ordinary Canadians’ concerns.

Lewis advocated for reforms to employment insurance and better wage support for workers affected by trade disputes. Additionally, he called for increased affordable housing, rent controls, and the establishment of publicly owned grocery stores to provide affordable food options. Addressing the affordability challenges faced by Toronto residents, Lewis underscored the city’s importance in revitalizing the federal NDP and expressed optimism about the party’s resurgence.

Following recent byelections where the NDP did not secure any seats, Lewis acknowledged that victory was not expected but emphasized positive signs of the party’s revival, particularly in Toronto. The party’s improved performance in the Toronto riding of Beaches-East York compared to previous elections signaled a positive trend for the NDP’s resurgence. Lewis affirmed the party’s rebuilding efforts and expressed confidence in their ongoing progress.

A senior NDP insider revealed plans to focus on Toronto seats as a strategic pathway to regaining official party status, emphasizing key issues championed by Lewis such as grocery costs, housing affordability, environmental concerns, and climate action. While the NDP has not won a Toronto seat since 2011, polling analyst Éric Grenier highlighted the party’s potential appeal in urban downtown ridings like those in Toronto.

Lewis’s potential candidacy for a Toronto seat was discussed, with indications that the party is considering various opportunities for electoral success. Despite challenges, the NDP’s ground organizing efforts in Beaches-East York were commended for attracting progressive voters disenchanted with certain government policies. The party’s emphasis on year-round community engagement and permanent organizing strategies aims to foster lasting connections beyond election cycles, building a more robust support base.

While the NDP faced disappointing results in other byelections, including shrinking vote shares in certain regions, analysts noted incremental improvements in the party’s overall standing compared to previous elections. Despite ongoing challenges, the NDP’s commitment to grassroots organizing and community-building initiatives under Lewis’s leadership signals a proactive approach to revitalizing the party.
