Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has confirmed the discovery of one Canadian citizen or permanent resident who had been missing in the aftermath of the devastating floods in Nepal’s border region with China. This individual had been out of reach due to communication disruptions but managed to establish contact on Tuesday.
The flash floods occurred a week ago following the collapse of a glacier in the Himalayan border area between Nepal and China. The calamity has resulted in over 1,100 fatalities and left more than 3,900 individuals unaccounted for. Nepal’s Foreign Ministry reports that approximately 590 foreign nationals from 39 different countries are still missing.
Minister Anand announced that Canada will dispatch over 18,000 emergency supplies from the Canadian Red Cross reserves to the affected area, in addition to the $5 million in humanitarian assistance already pledged by Ottawa. The relief efforts aim to support those impacted by the tragic events and assist in the recovery process.
The devastation caused by the floods can be observed in drone footage capturing the destruction in Devighat, Nepal, where homes have been reduced to skeletal remains and debris covers the landscape following the deadly flash floods that swept through the region.
