Ottawa’s ethics commissioner has determined that Liberal MP Lori Idlout breached Parliament’s conflict of interest code, although no punitive measures were recommended against her. The Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner, Konrad von Finckenstein, disclosed his investigation findings regarding Idlout’s utilization of her own store for purchases billed to the House of Commons.

Idlout repaid the House after acknowledging her mistake in submitting the items unintentionally. Expressing gratitude for the report, she stated to CBC News that she takes the matter seriously and did not foresee that the purchases, intended for legitimate parliamentary purposes, would advance personal interests as she does not derive income from the implicated businesses.

The commissioner characterized Idlout’s actions as errors of judgment made in good faith. He noted that Idlout promptly reimbursed the House upon being informed of the errors, demonstrating a genuine commitment to rectifying each non-compliance instance. Consequently, Finckenstein proposed that no sanctions be imposed.

Idlout, the sole shareholder and director of Carvings Nunavut, a gallery specializing in Inuit-made artworks, listed 13 purchases as protocol gifts since assuming office, with four from Carvings Nunavut. The commissioner found Idlout in breach of the code prohibiting MPs from advancing personal interests.

The purchases from Carvings Nunavut totaled $1,756, all made in 2025. The largest purchase, amounting to $1,380, comprised various items gifted to First Nations representatives at an NDP caucus meeting. Other purchases included gifts to a long-term care center, MP Greg Fergus, and Minister Rebecca Chartrand.

The expenses were incurred during Idlout’s tenure as an NDP MP before switching to the Liberal party in March 2026. Conservative MP Michael Barrett requested an inquiry into Idlout’s conduct under the conflict of interest code, criticizing her judgment. Idlout expressed regret for her error and committed to learning from the experience, pledging to adhere closely to the commissioner’s guidance moving forward.
