Fans of an animated Netflix series that has been described as “breathtaking” and “impeccable” have just been given an exciting update about the future of the show.
Blue Eye Samurai landed on the streaming platform back in 2023 and bowled over viewers with the tale of Mizu (voiced by Maya Erskine), a sword maker in Edo-period Japan seeking to hunt down and kill the only four white men in the country. She believes one of them could be her father.
Mizu must hide the fact she is a woman in order to enact her revenge, as well as the blue eyes which reveal her status as a “creature of shame.” She finds herself joined on her quest by soba maker Ringo (Masi Oka), who provides welcome comedic relief amidst the many tense and often violent scenes.
The show was co-created by husband and wife team Amber Noizumi and Michael Green whose previous credits include Blade Runner 2049 and Logan. The pair said their ambition for the series was for viewers to “forget they’re watching animation.”
“We would love this to cross over into every interest — that if you like The Witcher, if you like animation, if you like Game of Thrones, if you like The Crown, if you like historical drama, if you like Shakespeare in Love, if you like Tarantino movies, there’s something in Blue Eye Samurai for you,” they shared with Netflix’s Tudum upon its release.
The first season didn’t disappoint viewers, with the show currently boasting an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 97 per cent from critics and 93 per cent from audiences.
“Blue Eye Samurai is a stunning addition to the world of anime, and it’s no wonder that it has captured the hearts of viewers around the globe. This Netflix series is a true masterpiece, combining exquisite animation, an engaging storyline, and a rich cultural backdrop that makes it a must-watch for anime enthusiasts,” penned one viewer.
“Stunning in every single respect! A perfect storm of talent has banded together to bring us an animated series unlike any we’ve ever seen. Yes, we have seen samurai stories galore, and yes, we have seen great animation and interesting stories, but never before at this level of excellence,” another eager show fan added.
While a second season has already been confirmed, viewers are still facing a years-long wait for their next fix. The new episodes are not currently expected until at least 2026 and will see Mizu arrive in London on a mission to find the two remaining men who could be her dad.
However, some exciting news about the upcoming season has just been shared with fans. Deadline has announced that legendary director John Aoshima will be helming one of the upcoming episodes of Blue Eye Samurai.
Aoshima’s CV includes 20 years working on American Dad as well as roles in the animation department of The Simpsons, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Futurama and Kubo and the Two Strings.
Season 1 of Blue Eye Samurai is now streaming on Netflix. Season 2 is expected in 2026.
